The Scout and Guide groups of Barton-le-Clay, Bedfordshire have been raising money to build a new combined group Headquarters in the village. The initial idea was conceived almost 20 years ago and money is still being raised to enable the scouts and guides of Barton to benefit from new facilities. The project is now well underway. Our Building Contractor moved on site on September 1 st 2009, and has already completed phase 2 of the project.
The Management Committee decided last year that in order to step up our campaign we should phase our construction period.
Phase 1, the construction of a water tight, secure basic shell, consisting of the main hall, entrance lobby, kitchen and toilet facility is completed. The cost of this first phase was £371,861.48.
Phase 2 – Activity Hall and Front Auxiliary areas; will provide finished floors, heating, plumbing, electrics and a toilet facility. On completion (8-10 weeks) this would enable us to use the new building!
The cost of this second phase is in the region of £165,000; we now have the funding in place to finish phase 2 and we hope to be completed by Easter 2011. At this stage we can use the building.
Phase 3 will complete the building, fitting out the kitchen, main toilet & shower provision, and a committee room. We have raised approximately £10,000 towards the remaining £88,000 required to complete this phase. Once we have the kitchen fitted, we will be able to hire our new facilities out to other groups in the village, helping to raise additional funds.
The 5 members of the committee are now stepping up our fund raising efforts to enable us to complete the project to Phase 3. Once this is all achieved and in use by our young people we will continue our work towards the final Phase 4 – to build and equip our second hall.

The BIG Lottery Fund has recently awarded grants worth a total of £1,458,370 to be shared among six projects in the region. The combined Scout & Guide HQ has been awarded a £55,736 grant for providing a valuable new community building.
The committee are very grateful for the support that the BIG lottery fund have provided and look forward to working with them in the future.
Barton Scout & Guides has been extremely fortunate this year in receiving major funding of £50,000 from Waste Recycling Group (WRG), administered and distributed by Waste Recycling Environmental (WREN) for our New HQ project. This grant will provide the mechanical & electrical work to phase two. We are indebted to Wren for this grant which will enable us to use the building in early 2011.
We are excited that the work can start on our Ground Source Heat pump system in early January.
This system will provide thermal energy to help heat our building at no running cost. This has been made possible by two generous grants from the Department of Energy and Climate Change and the Community Sustainable Energy Programme (CSEP).
